Understanding Rational Numbers on a Number Line
Key Concepts:
Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction a/b where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0.
- Every fraction corresponds to a unique point on the number line
- Between any two rational numbers, there are infinitely many other rational numbers
- Proper fractions (|a| < |b|) always lie between -1 and 1
- Improper fractions can be converted to mixed numbers for easier plotting
How to Plot:
- Divide the number line into equal parts based on the denominator
- Count the number of parts from zero specified by the numerator
- For negative fractions, move to the left of zero
- The resulting point represents the fraction
Examples:
1/2 = 0.5 | 1/3 ≈ 0.333... | 3/4 = 0.75 | -2/3 ≈ -0.666...
