Effect of Acid Rain on Plants
Simulated Environment Experiment
Observe how different pH levels of rain affect plant health over time. Compare normal rain with increasingly acidic rain conditions!
Normal Rain (pH 5.6)
Days Exposed: 0
Observation:
Select a rain type to begin the simulation. Observe changes in plant health over time.
The Science Behind Acid Rain
Effects on Plants:
- Leaf damage: Acid rain removes protective waxy coating, damaging chlorophyll
- Soil depletion: Acidifies soil, leaching away essential nutrients like calcium and magnesium
- Root damage: Impairs root systems' ability to absorb water and nutrients
- Growth reduction: Chronic exposure stunts growth and reduces photosynthesis
pH Scale:
Normal rain has pH ~5.6 (slightly acidic due to CO₂). Acid rain has pH below 5.0, with severe cases below 4.0. Each whole pH drop represents 10x more acidity.
