What is Addition?
Addition is putting numbers together to find the total. We use the "+" sign to show addition.
Learning About Addition
The Addition Sign (+):
The "+" sign means "add" or "put together". When we see 2 + 3, it means we're putting 2 and 3 together to find the total.
| Addition Problem | Meaning | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 + 1 | One and one more | 2 |
| 2 + 2 | Two and two more | 4 |
| 3 + 2 | Three and two more | 5 |
| 4 + 3 | Four and three more | 7 |
Addition Stories:
Addition helps us solve real-life problems:
- 2 apples + 3 apples = 5 apples - If you have 2 apples and get 3 more, you have 5 apples
- 1 ball + 4 balls = 5 balls - If you have 1 ball and find 4 more, you have 5 balls
- 3 pencils + 2 pencils = 5 pencils - If you have 3 pencils and get 2 more, you have 5 pencils
Counting On Strategy:
When adding numbers, you can start with the larger number and count up:
For 3 + 2: Start with 3... then count 4, 5. So 3 + 2 = 5!
This makes addition easier and faster!
