The Indian Farming Cycle (Kharif/Rabi)
Key Concepts:
Farming activities in India are heavily dependent on the **Monsoon (Kharif)** and **Winter (Rabi)** seasons. Timing planting and harvesting is crucial for a successful yield. The choice of **soil type** also impacts which crops thrive.
| Activity Type | Examples | Best Season |
|---|---|---|
| **Kharif Crops** (Rainy) | Jowar, Bajra, Paddy (Rice) | Monsoon (June - October) |
| **Rabi Crops** (Winter) | Wheat, Mustard, Gram | Winter (November - March) |
| **Tools** | Khurpi (weeding), Plough (tilling), Khunti (loosening) | Throughout the year, depending on the task. |
Soil Importance:
Different crops require different soils. **Black soil** is excellent for cotton, while **alluvial soil** is ideal for rice and sugarcane. Basva must choose the right crop for his farm's soil type!
