Human Physiology Concepts

Electrocardiogram (ECG):

Records the electrical activity of the heart. Key components:

  • P wave: Atrial depolarization
  • QRS complex: Ventricular depolarization
  • T wave: Ventricular repolarization
Spirometry:

Measures lung function and capacity:

  • Tidal Volume: Normal breathing volume (~500ml)
  • Vital Capacity: Maximum exhale after maximum inhale (~4-5L)
  • FEV1: Forced expiratory volume in 1 second
Reflex Response:

Automatic, rapid responses to stimuli involving:

  • Receptor: Detects stimulus
  • Sensory neuron: Carries signal to CNS
  • Motor neuron: Carries response signal
  • Effector: Muscle or gland that responds
