Nano-Gold Synthesis Game
Turkevich Method Simulation
Synthesize gold nanoparticles using the Turkevich method! Follow the steps carefully to create a stable colloidal gold solution. Monitor temperature and observe the color changes as gold ions are reduced to nanoparticles.
HAuCl₄: 0 mL
Na₃C₆H₅O₇: 0 mL
H₂O: 0 mL
Temperature: 25°C
Stage: Setup
Current Step:
Add 1mL of 1% chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄) solution to the flask.
Observation:
The solution is currently clear and colorless.
The Science Behind Turkevich Method
Key Reactions:
1. Gold ion reduction: Citrate acts as both reducing agent and stabilizer
HAuCl₄ + 3Na₃C₆H₅O₇ → Au⁰ (nanoparticles) + 3CO₂ + 3NaCl + other products
2. Nanoparticle formation: Gold atoms nucleate and grow into nanoparticles (~10-20nm)
Critical Parameters:
- Temperature: Must reach boiling for complete reduction (~100°C)
- Ratio: Typically 1:5 gold to citrate molar ratio
- Concentration: 0.01% HAuCl₄ solution commonly used
