Human Digestive System: Label the Parts
Identify the parts of the human digestive system.
Amoeba is a single-celled organism that obtains nutrition through a process called phagocytosis. It engulfs food particles by forming temporary finger-like projections called pseudopodia. The food is then enclosed in a food vacuole where digestion occurs. After nutrients are absorbed, the undigested material is expelled from the cell.
Animal Nutrition Concepts
Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain and utilize food:
- Ingestion: Taking in food
- Digestion: Breaking down food into simpler substances
- Absorption: Taking in digested food into the body
- Assimilation: Using absorbed nutrients for growth and repair
- Egestion: Removing undigested waste
The human digestive system consists of:
- Mouth: Where food is chewed and mixed with saliva
- Esophagus: Tube that carries food to the stomach
- Stomach: Where food is mixed with digestive juices
- Small Intestine: Where most digestion and absorption occurs
- Large Intestine: Where water is absorbed and feces formed
- Accessory organs: Liver, pancreas, and gallbladder
Different animals have different digestive systems based on their diet:
- Ruminants (cows, buffaloes) have a four-chambered stomach to digest cellulose
- Carnivores have shorter digestive systems for meat digestion
- Insects like butterflies have tube-like mouthparts (proboscis) to suck nectar
- Mosquitoes have specialized mouthparts to pierce skin and suck blood
