Smart Charts!
Data is a way to organize information! Learn how to collect and record data using **Tally Marks** and visualize it clearly using **Pictographs** (charts with pictures), then practice interpreting these smart charts.
- Select a concept below to explore data representation.
- Learn how to record data using **Tally Marks (groups of 5)**.
- Understand how to read a **Pictograph** using its key/legend.
- Use the **Classification** module to sort data types.
- Test your interpretation skills with the **Practice Quiz** button.
Data handling is about counting, sorting, and showing information clearly. Charts and graphs simplify complex numbers, making them easy to interpret at a glance.
The Basics of Data Literacy
Tally marks are a fast, simple way to count objects while recording. They are grouped in sets of five (four vertical lines crossed by one diagonal line), making quick counting easier.
| Number | Tally Marks |
|---|---|
| 3 | ||| |
| 5 | ๐ |
| 9 | ๐ |||| |
A pictograph uses pictures or symbols to represent data. The most important part is the **Key (Legend)**, which tells you what value each picture stands for (e.g., one apple icon = 5 apples).
Interpreting a chart means answering questions about the data, such as: "Which item is the most popular?", "How many more does one item have than another?", or "What is the total count of all items?".
